Welcome to ActiveRoles DNS Manager

With ActiveRoles DNS Manager, the capabilities of ActiveRoles Server have been extended to include an enterprise DNS management solution for Microsoft DNS based environments. The solution works on top of existing Microsoft DNS infrastructure, and addresses substantial challenges inherent in distributed DNS operations by providing a powerful, easy to deploy and use, Web-based console that facilitates secure delegation and execution of DNS data management tasks.

As opposed to standard Microsoft tools, such as the Microsoft DNS console, which are well suited for performing individual management tasks by highly authorized, skilled personnel, ActiveRoles DNS Manager provides the scalable and secure DNS data management capabilities that are necessary for large network environments:

  • Allows secure, efficient delegation of DNS data management tasks by providing role-based, fine-grained access control of DNS namespaces
  • Features a powerful, Web-based interface for delegating and performing DNS data management tasks

For more information about ActiveRoles DNS Manager, refer to the ActiveRoles DNS Manager Administrator Guide, which is part of the ActiveRoles Server documentation set.

Getting Started

Contents of the Release Package

The ActiveRoles DNS Manager release package contains the following product items:
  • ActiveRoles DNS Manager 1.0.1
  • Documentation

Installation Procedure

Use these steps to install and start working with ActiveRoles DNS Manager:

  1. Ensure that your Web server meets the system requirement for DNS Manager.
  2. Prepare a domain user account that has administrator rights on your Web server as well as on the computers running the DNS servers you are planning to administer with DNS Manager.
  3. On your Web server, run the DNS Manager Setup program as a domain admin, and follow the instructions in the Installation Wizard.

The account under which you are running the Setup program must have administrative access to the Administration Service used by the ActiveRoles Server Web Interface installed on the Web server, that is, it must be assigned to the AR Server Admin role on that Administration Service. Thus, assuming the default security configuration of the Service, it would suffice for the account to have the domain admin rights in the domain in which the Service is installed.

  1. When prompted for the DNS Manager application account, supply the pre-Windows 2000 logon name and the password of the account you prepared in Step 2.
  2. Note down the name of the virtual directory where Setup is going to install DNS Manager. You can adjust the name as needed, in the Installation Wizard.
  3. Follow the instructions in the Installation Wizard to complete the installation.
  4. Log on under the account you used to install DNS Manager, and use your Web browser to connect to the DNS Manager Web console with the URL composed of the name of your Web server and the name of the virtual directory you noted in Step 5.

During installation of DNS Manager, only the account, under which you run the solution Setup program, automatically receives the administrator rights on DNS Manager, and is authorized to perform any task related to the DNS namespace administration, such as deleting zones and modifying security of DNS objects, along with the privilege to delegate administrative control over DNS namespaces.

For more information on the pre-installation tasks and detailed instructions on how to install, configure and use DNS Manager, refer to the ActiveRoles DNS Manager Administrator Guide, which is part of the ActiveRoles Server documentation set.
